The purpose of deep tissue massage is to release the chronic deeply held tensions that form into tightly contracted knots known as “adhesions”. Adhesions block circulation, limit movement and can cause inflammation resulting in, for example a stiff neck, painful shoulders or lower back soreness. Compacted tissues may also irritate and displace nerves particularly in and around the cranium, along the neck and spine or sacrum/pelvis area causing potentially chronic and severe pain. Compensations and distortions as the result of injury or repetitive use are also addressed as corrective measures are applied to realign the body to its natural posture, gait and biomechanical ease. At first faster and lighter strokes used in order to warm up and prepare the body for deep work. The tissues are then ready to receive this deeper work without contracting as the strokes become slower with more penetration. The attention is now focused on the deepest layers of muscle, tendons and connective tissue or fascia. Direct pressure or friction is applied across the grain of the muscle. This is used to breakdown the micro fiber adhesions within the tissues. The body is also at times massaged with the grain of muscle fibers and the flow of energy meridians to maintain integration. Specific parts that indicate the need for special attention are focused on from one session to the next, as required. Deep tissue massage works directly by physically breaking down adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement and ideal posture. It helps to loosen muscle fibers, realign tissue structure, improve blood circulation and eliminate toxins. Deep tissue massage is explored at the threshold level of the individual’s pain tolerance and may result in some temporary soreness by evening or early the next day. However in a day or two you will feel much better and clearly notice the new relaxed way in which your body holds itself. Overall the body/mind is soothed, toned and at ease as a result of the work. It is important to be realistic about what deep tissue massage can achieve. Chronic knots, tensions and attitude/postural issues built up over a lifetime need regular deep work in combination with the precision of craniosacral biodynamic therapy. This invites a committed adjustment to way in which we meet and interact with daily life to generate authentic and lasting change. |
